Good (and bad) News from the Produce Department

The good news about our organic fruits and vegetables is we know where our food comes from. The bad news…bad weather will often determine availability of our produce.

While our midwestern springs, summer and  fall offerings are abundant with the freshest varieties of local and colorful produce, we rely on southern regions to provide our produce during our winters. Colder than normal temperatures, heavier rains and even early freezes affected many southern-raised crops year.

Here at Valley Natural Foods, produce staff is working extra hard to keep up with regional weather reports on a weekly basis to determine which distributors have available produce. There will be times when certain items are less available such as a current shortage on salad greens, broccoli and several varieties of citrus fruits. You may also notice that we are sourcing some of our fruits and vegetables from outside the U.S. as well.

If you are looking for something specific, please ask any of our produce staff for an update on availability. They can also help you with selecting other fruits and veggies as a substitute if you are preparing a recipe that calls for specific produce ingredients. Don’t forget to check out our weekly Produce Possibilities display, complete with recipes and special pricing on readily available items, which is always good news!
