As you may know, our healthy kids’ 4-week summer program, 5-2-1-0, kicked off this week! Kids can stop by the wellness department to sign up for the program, get a list of activities and a FREE fruit coupon. The first week’s theme is to eat at least five fruits and vegetables a day.
How do you get your kids to do this? Here are three rules to follow: Try it!; Mix it; and Slice It! Offer your kids new fruits and veggies prepared different ways and have them try at least 3 bites of each–it can take 7-10 tries before they like a new food. Many veggies are good with dips or dressings (try yogurt-based ones for a healthier alternative). Also, make fruits into fruit smoothies or m ix them with yogurt. Add veggies to foods you already make such as pastas, soups, casseroles, pizza, rice, etc. Fruit can also be added to many breakfast foods. Finally, have chopped veggies ready for kids to grab! They will more easily try something that is small and ready for them to munch on.
Now is also the time to be thinking of the 2nd week of FREE healthy 5-2-1-0 events at Valley Natural Foods! Sign up 32 hours in advance: online, in-store or at customer service. July 2nd kicks off the healthy theme of limiting screen time to two hours or less! Two local children’s authors will be here–one on July 2nd at 1:00 p.m. and the other on July 5th at 1:00 p.m. to inspire kids to try reading instead of watching television! Both will give captivating presentations of their books.
