Press Release:

VALLEY NATURAL FOODS HOSTS SCREENING OF FOOD, INC. ON APRIL 8

In support of a healthier you, healthy community, and Earth Day, Valley Natural Foods will host a free screening of Food, Inc. at the School of Environmental Studies in Apple Valley on April 8, starting at 6 p.m.  The documentary film Food, Inc. uncovers surprising ─ and often unsettling ─ truths about what we eat, how it’s produced, and the long-lasting effects it has on us, our children, our local economy, our community and the environment. The screening will be followed by a panel of local fair trade farmers, food producers, and a community gardening advocate who will share their perspectives, offer sustainable healthy alternatives to what is revealed in Food, Inc., and respond to audience questions.

This event is free, with donations to the School of Environmental Studies Education Foundation encouraged. Valley Natural Foods will match up to $100 in donations collected. Fair trade coffee and healthy snacks will be provided before the film, as well as a chance to meet people and be inspired towards healthy eating, while supporting local farms, food businesses, our community, and environment.

The panel following Food, Inc. will include Atina Diffley of Eagan, organic vegetable farmer and educator; Jeff Jirik, organic farmer, cheese maker and president of Faribault Dairy; Byron Korus, chef owner of Special Events Catering and ChuckWagon Catering in Plymouth and co-developer for The Culinary Education Center to be based in Burnsville; John Peterson, president of Ferndale Market, selling regional foods in Cannon Falls; Pat Schoenecker, community gardening advocate and creator of the non-profit Growing Community in Apple Valley; and organic farmer and poultry grower Larry Schultz of Owatonna.

How much do we really know about the food we buy and serve to our families? In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, now controlled by a handful of corporations with the consent and support of our government’s regulatory agencies. Profit is often put ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers, and our environment. Food, Inc. exposes and educates about America’s industrialized food system, its immediate and long-lasting impact on our lives and our communities, and possible steps towards a healthier future.
