B The Change: Buy B Corp Products
By Valley Natural Foods Staff
When I first learned about B Corp Certification, I thought oh no, another certification on top of non-GMO, USDA Organic and Fair-Trade labels that will confuse people. However, after doing a bit of research, I realized that B Corp Certification is the creme de la creme of third-party validation, focusing not just on whether a product is organic, fair trade or non-GMO, but on the organizational level too. This certification reflects analyzing a company’s environmental performance, how it treats its workers, its governance in regards to transparency and engagement practices and how well its products and services improve the lives of its customers.
To receive B Corp certification, a company must fill out a lengthy assessment that measures its success in the areas mentioned: worker impact, environment, governance and customers. Companies that receive at least an 80 out of 200 points, qualify for B Corp Certification, which is solidified after a phone interview and after submitting supporting documentation. If an organization does not achieve at least an 80, the B Corp certifiers will help the company to develop an action plan to increase its score. What’s really neat, is that the B Corp has a database of all the qualifying companies on its website, with scores listed and complete reports per organization available for download: www.bcorporation.net/community/find-a-b-corp
What makes this even better is that many companies at Valley Natural Foods are B Corp Certified. B Corp certified companies are described as leaders of a global movement of people using business as a force for good™. They meet the highest standards of overall social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability and aspire to use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.
