Gray Duck Chai Teas Gray Duck Chai started in 2011 when Katey Nieber couldn’t find a chai tea in Minneapolis that matched the superior quality and flavor of one she had tasted in Seattle. With a background from the Culinary Institute of America she started concocting her own custom chai blends. She partnered with Jon Alden, a fellow chai enthusiast and the rest is history. All of their chai teas are made from 100% organic ingredients, containing just the right balance of robust freshly ground spices, black tea sourced from the Assam region of India and then lightly sweetened. We now carry the following varieties: Burnt Sugar and Ginger Rooibos and Minnesota Honey Nine Spice Blend These locally produced chai teas can be found in Aisle 5 near the boxed teas and instant coffee. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et1to7Hv8ao "Would you like to round-up?" is a phrase you've likely heard many times if you've been into Valley Natural Foods. This question is a part of our Register Round-Up program where we partner with you to give back to the community. Register Round-Up donations go to local organizations that do fantastic work. These donations go to local food shelves, providing healthy snacks for elementary school students, and a program called Midwest Food Connection. From their website: "Midwest Food Connection (MFC) had its beginnings in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and Saint Paul, MN) when two natural food co-ops started a community outreach initiative in 1993. Four years later a group of committed educators founded our non-profit to bring natural foods education to a broad range of area schools. The programming has grown and flourished ever since." We spoke with Emily Houser, an Educator with Midwest Food Connection to learn

October is Non-GMO month, and the Non-GMO Project asks that you help spread the word and stand up for the right to know what ingredients are in our food. Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, exist in one form or another in 80% of conventional American packaged foods, and can be found primarily in foods that contain corn, soy, canola and sugar beets. These ingredients are artificially manipulated to combine genes from other sources, through processes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding. Though GMOs are used with specific goals in mind such as resistance to pests or increased yields, the long-term effects of GMOs on our health and our environment are not yet fully known or understood.  In fact, 60 countries around the world, including all members of the European Union, have banned or restricted the sale of food

In the midst of the transition from summer fruits and veggies we get the super fruit that is the pomegranate. The fruit itself is in seed form underneath thick red skin, and offers a challenge for those seeking the vibrantly flavored fruit. The super fruit designation comes from the fact that pomegranate juice is super high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are useful in helping cells fight off damage from free radicals which can come from exposure to air pollutants, chemicals and UV rays. Antioxidants are said to fight off cancer. Pomegranates are also high in Vitamin C and Vitamin K. Vitamin C is essential for many processes in the body. Vitamin C also of course helps boost immunity. See below for more information about this super fruit and how to use them. Pomegranate Health Benefits Very high in antioxidants High in Vitamin C and K

September is National Honey Month!  While honey might traditionally be thought of as a sweetener, there are many other uses that this versatile substance can provide. To celebrate the delicious substance from the hardworking honey bee we’ve compiled a list of different honey uses that you might not have thought of. Honey Face Mask Honey is amazing for skin. It has the ability to moisturize making it an ideal addition to a skin care regimen. Along with that, honey is an antioxidant which helps combat nasty free radicals that can potentially damage skin. It’s antimicrobial and antiseptic properties also make honey a great contender for combating acne and other blemishes. To use as a face mask apply honey to your skin, leave for 10-30 minutes and rinse thoroughly (especially around the scalp line) with warm water. Then rinse with cold water to help keep your

With an aim to inspire families to eat at home together more often, we are proud to celebrate National Family Meals Month™ in September!  During September, we encourage families to share one more meal together per week and we will highlight simple, healthy meal solutions to help make that happen. Did you know that numerous studies underscore the long-term health, academic and societal benefits of consistently eating together as a family?  Home-cooked meals nourish the spirit, brain and health of all family members.  Not to mention, people who frequently cook at home eat fewer, healthier calories.' Additionally, regular family meals are linked to the kinds of outcomes that we all want for our children: higher grades and self-esteem, healthier eating habits and less risky behavior. However, according to a 2013 Harris poll, only 30 percent of American families share dinner every night.
