We’re Captivated by Coconuts!
The first thought that comes to mind when I think of a coconut are memories of sitting between two palms while sipping on a sweet frozen beverage. But there is more than meets the eye with this exotic treat.
Coconuts have been utilized for centuries for their juice, meat, milk and oil. Until recently coconut fat has been deemed “unhealthy” because of the presence of saturated fat which we now know to be untrue in the case of the coconut.
So what makes the fat from coconuts healthier than other fats? It all has to do with the composition of fat molecules within the coconut. All fat is made up of chains of fatty acids which are then classified based on their molecular length. The longer and more complex the fatty acid, the harder it is for the body to break down and the more likely it is stored as fat. Coconuts contain medium chained fatty acids that are broken down more easily than long chained fatty acids, and are more likely to be used for energy.
Along with being a good energy source, coconuts come with a long list of health benefits. Some health benefits include:
- Disease prevention
- Improved digestion
- Relief of symptoms for certain illnesses.
- Helps to improve cholesterol ratio
- Kills viruses and bacteria that cause certain disease and illnesses
- And much more!
These health benefits are related to the fact that coconuts are a functional food, meaning that the food has a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition (Mayo Clinic). So not only does coconut taste good, it also is good for you!
The power of the coconut does not stop here! Coconuts can also be used in your beauty regimen. Coconuts can be used to:
- Soften skin and offer relief from dryness
- Prevent wrinkles
- Promote healthier looking hair
- Provide protection from harmful UV rays
- Help control dandruff
- And much more!
So what are some easy ways to incorporate coconuts into your everyday life? Try switching out your cooking oils at home with coconut oil, the best part about coconut oil is you can sauté, bake, blend it, or eat it plain! Want to bake with coconut oil? It’s easier than you think, simply substitute oil with coconut oil at a 1:1 ratio. The possibilities really are endless!
